How many “M’s” can we add to Mmmm…? That’s the best way to describe this mouthwatering bean bake dish. It’s easy to make, and so delicious, you’ll have to buy bigger spoons. It’s perfect for potlucks, barbecues, weekend supper with cornbread, or just about any time you want receive a ton of compliments.

Serves 6-10


3 cups (480 g) 13 Foods frozen chickpeas*
3 cups (420 g) 13 Foods frozen red beans*
2 cups (280 g) 13 Foods frozen black beans*
2 slices maple bacon
2 onions, finely chopped
1-½ cup (375 mL) ketchup
¼ cup (60 ml) brown sugar
1 bottle (12 fl oz / 355 mL) lager, ale, port, or hard cider
¼ cup (60 ml) apple cider vinegar
¼ cup (60 ml) molasses
¼ cup (60 ml) dijon, yellow, or grainy mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
Few drops of hot sauce (optional)


  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • In a medium ovenproof saucepan, sauté bacon until crisp. Remove, crumble and set aside. Add onions and sauté until golden.
  • Add our delicious chickpeas and our yummy red and black beans along with ketchup, brown sugar, beer, vinegar, molasses, mustard, salt and pepper, hot sauce (if used), and bring to a simmer. Cover and put in oven to bake for 1 hour, stirring once or twice until thickened and bubbly.
  • Stir in bacon crumbles. Serve.
  • Option: use vegetable stock or apple juice in place of beer.

*Cook according to package directions.
